Electricians in Inner North Canberra
The inner north is the part of Canberra where a 100-year-old cottage and a five-year-old apartment tower can share a postcode. Suburbs such as Ainslie, Reid and Braddon were among the first in the capital, laid out on Garden City lines in the 1920s, while Northbourne Avenue has filled with apartment blocks since the light rail opened in April 2019.
That split shapes almost every job we quote here. In the older streets the work is about bringing tired wiring and switchboards up to modern standards without spoiling a heritage home. In the newer buildings it is about adding chargers, data and lighting inside the rules of a body corporate.
Inner north homes and what they need
The 1920s heritage precincts. Reid was mostly built in 1926 and 1927 to house public servants arriving for the opening of Parliament House. In Ainslie, the Corroboree Park, Alt Crescent and Wakefield Gardens precincts date from 1925 to 1929 and sit on the ACT Heritage Register. These cottages have been rewired in stages by different owners, so we often find old and new cable on the same circuit, small switchboards with little spare room, and meter boards that may have asbestos backing. Replacing the board and testing every circuit is usually the right starting point.
Post-war suburbs. Further out, Hackett, Watson, Downer and much of Lyneham and Dickson were built after the war. These brick homes tend to have too few power points for modern kitchens and home offices, and fuse boards that were never sized for split systems or induction cooking.
Apartments along the corridor. In 2001 most inner north dwellings were separate houses. By the 2021 Census apartments had overtaken them. Owners in these blocks ask us about EV charging in basement car spaces, extra power and data in study nooks, and lighting upgrades, all of which need a word with the owners corporation first.
The jobs we are asked for most in the inner north
Switchboard work tops the list here. That ranges from swapping a ceramic fuse board for circuit breakers and safety switches through to adding circuits for an oven or air conditioner. Our switchboard upgrades page explains what is involved.
Solar and batteries come next. On a heritage roof we plan panel placement around the ACT Heritage Council’s guidance on services, which favours rear and side slopes.
Lighting is the third common request, from LED downlights in renovated kitchens to pendants and garden lights that suit an older home.
Then there is data and cabling. Plenty of people in the inner north work from home at least part of the week, and solid brick walls are hard on Wi-Fi. Wired data points to the study and lounge fix most of that.
