What does data cabling involve?

Data cabling runs network cable, usually Cat6 in homes, from your modem or NBN connection box to wall data points where you need a steady connection: the home office, the TV, gaming setups and ceiling Wi-Fi access points. In most Canberra homes it runs through the roof space and down wall cavities.

Under ACMA rules, data and phone cabling must be done by a registered cabler, or someone they properly supervise.

How a data cabling job works

Most home jobs follow the same five steps.

  1. Tell us what you need

    Which rooms need a connection, where your NBN connection box and modem are, and where the Wi-Fi drops out. We reply within 24 hours.

  2. Plan the runs and quote

    We check roof access, wall types and cable routes, and give you a fixed-price quote before any work starts.

  3. Run the cable

    We run Cat6 through the roof space and wall cavities to flush wall plates, keeping it clear of power cables.

  4. Terminate and test

    Each point is terminated at the modem or a patch panel and tested end to end, so you know every outlet works.

  5. Label and hand over

    We label each point, connect your modem or access points and show you which outlet goes where.

Hi Folks, i had a circuit breaker continually tripping and thus no powerpoints working. Nicolas skilffully trouble shooted the whole thing, and worked with remarkable speed and professionaliam. I thought i had identified all the powerpoints, but i had missed a critical one on the end of the line, and as fate would have it, the solar hot water pump had a short circuit and was plugged into that one. As i say, nicolas was tops. Being a DIY person i was very interested in his work and he explained it all to me as he went along. The call out cost seemed high, but i have nothing to compare it against. And nicolas more than earned the fee and i was super pleased with the price. His focus was getting the job done without going beyond the callout fee. He made that happen. I will definately use this company again. Great experience.

These guys are the best. Initially they came over to put a couple of power points in my bedroom then they ended up installing the TV on the wall. Their second visit was to change all of my light fitting to down lights and fans in the bedrooms. And also updated the meter box to make it compliant. They’ve done a fantastic job. So reliable and efficient. Lovely guys and their work is amazing. I would recommend them 100%.

I am very impressed with Nick at Fused electrical on the recent solar installation . There are a few reasons for this:
They are on time;
Their quote was the best value for money;
Their work is neat and tidy, leaving the site clean;
They explain the installation as well as setting up the app for monitoring;
And, they are friendly and knowledgeable.
I am very happy with the quality and performance of their work and the company.

We heard about Fused from Facebook and chose them for our solar and battery install (Aiko 14kw and 32kwh Sig). Nick came out to the house, gave us a personalised quote and made changes as requested. He explained every part of the quote and the timeline was great for us.
The system is flawless, we have been off-grid since and love being able to use power anytime we want!

There is a reason they have so many 5-star reviews, and we have recommended them to friends and family.
Thank you guys!

Dropouts and slow Wi-Fi usually come down to where your modem sits and how far the signal has to travel.
A wired data point or access point in the right place fixes most of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can electricians do data cabling?
An electrical licence on its own doesn’t cover data cabling. Under ACMA rules, cabling for phone and data networks must be done by a registered cabler, or by someone working under their proper supervision. Many electricians hold both. Ask any installer for their cabling registration, and you should get a cabling advice form when the job is done.
Is Cat6 overkill for home use?
No. Cat6 costs little more than older Cat5e, handles gigabit speeds comfortably and leaves headroom for faster NBN plans and Wi-Fi access points. Cat6a is worth it for long runs or where you want 10 gigabit speeds later. Because most of the cost is labour, it makes sense to run the better cable once.
Can I run an Ethernet cable myself?
You can plug a ready-made patch lead between your modem and a device. Running cable through walls and ceilings, or fitting wall data points, is cabling work that ACMA rules say must be done by a registered cabler or under their supervision.
Can you install a new data line for my NBN modem?
Yes, we can run a new data cable from your NBN connection box to where you want the modem, or from the modem to other rooms, so you aren’t stuck with the modem in a hallway. The NBN connection box itself is NBN equipment: to move it, ask your internet provider to arrange it with NBN.
How much does data cabling cost in Canberra?
It depends on how many data points you need, whether the house is single or two storey, roof space access, wall types (double brick takes longer than plasterboard), cable run lengths, and whether you want a patch panel or Wi-Fi access points. We look at the job and give you a free, fixed-price quote before any work starts.
How many data points do I need?
Start with anything that sits still and uses a lot of data: the home office, the main TV, gaming consoles and any ceiling Wi-Fi access points. Then think about rooms you might use differently later. Running a spare cable while the roof space is open costs much less than coming back.
Will wired access points fix Wi-Fi dead spots?
Usually, yes. A ceiling access point wired back to your modem with Cat6 gives a strong signal at the far end of the house without the speed loss of wireless extenders, and it can be powered through the same cable (PoE), so no power point is needed.
Can I upgrade my existing network infrastructure?
Yes, our services include not only new installations but also upgrades and expansions of existing networks to accommodate new technologies and increased demands.
