DC or AC ceiling fan, and what does installation involve?

For bedrooms and living areas we usually recommend a DC fan: it uses about half the power of an AC fan, runs quieter and has more speeds. AC fans cost less to buy and suit garages and rooms you rarely use. Installing either means fixing the fan to the ceiling framing, not just the plasterboard, wiring it to the lighting circuit (often at the existing light point) and keeping the blades at least 2.1 metres above the floor. In the ACT this is licensed electrical work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to install a ceiling fan?
It depends on whether the fan goes at an existing light point or needs new cable run to it, how easy the ceiling is to get into, the ceiling height, and whether you want a separate wall switch for the light. Several fans in one visit is usually better value than one at a time. We give a free fixed-price quote once we know the rooms and the fans.
Do I need an electrician to install a ceiling fan?
Yes. In the ACT, installing fixed wiring needs an unrestricted electrical licence. A licensed electrician also checks the circuit and the switching, and fixes the fan to the ceiling framing, which matters for a heavy, spinning appliance above your bed.
Do I need an electrician to install an exhaust fan?
Yes, for a hardwired exhaust fan or a 3-in-1 heat, light and exhaust unit. Both connect to fixed wiring, and 3-in-1 units are usually wired to separate switches for the heat lamps, light and fan. We size the fan to the room so it actually clears steam and moisture.
What are the rules for installing ceiling fans?
The blades need to be at least 2.1 metres above the floor, which in a standard 2.4 metre room usually means a close-to-ceiling fan. The fan has to be fixed to the ceiling framing, not just plasterboard, and the wiring done by a licensed electrician, who tests it and lodges a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
Can a ceiling fan go where my light is now?
Usually. The existing light point already has power, so the fan can often go in the same spot if the ceiling framing can take it. We fit a brace between the joists if there is nothing solid to mount to, and you can keep the light by choosing a fan with a light kit.
Can I buy my own fan and have you install it?
Yes. Many people buy the fan from a retailer and book the installation separately. Tell us the brand and model when you ask for a quote, so we can check it suits the room, the ceiling height and the switching you want before the day.
Can I have a fan installed in an outdoor area?
Yes, we can install ceiling fans in outdoor patio and alfresco areas. Choose a fan rated for outdoor use, as indoor fans are not built for damp air and wind. It gives you a more comfortable outdoor living space during the warmer months.
What should I consider when choosing an exhaust fan?
The correct sizing and installation of exhaust fans are vital for effective moisture and odor removal. Our team conducts precise room sizing and extraction calculations to ensure optimal performance.

We recommend DC fans instead of AC fans. DC fans are much quieter in comparison, making them good for living spaces & bedrooms.
