Electricians in Kaleen

Kaleen sits on the eastern side of Belconnen, between Ginninderra Drive and Baldwin Drive, with streets named after Australian rivers. It was gazetted in 1974 and filled quickly with brick family homes, many of them now owned outright by long-term residents.

That long ownership shapes the work. People in Kaleen tend to improve the house they have rather than move, so we spend our time making older homes more comfortable and bringing their electrics up to date. We are a family owned and run Canberra business, licensed (476229C) and insured, and every job is quoted at a fixed price.

Kaleen homes and what they need

In the 2021 Census more than nine in ten Kaleen dwellings were separate houses, and about half had four or more bedrooms. A higher share are owned outright than the Canberra average. In short: large houses, settled owners and wiring that is now close to 50 years old.

What that tends to mean in practice:

  • Heating but no cooling. Many homes were built with gas or ducted heating and nothing for summer, which is why fans come up so often.
  • Bathroom and laundry fans that vent into the roof, or no exhaust at all, leaving moisture in the ceiling.
  • The original fuse board. Rewireable fuses and missing safety switches are still common in houses that have been extended but never rewired.
  • Too few power points for a home office, a second fridge and everything else a family of five runs at once.
  • Wi-Fi that cannot reach the far bedroom of a long single-storey house.

The jobs we are asked for most in Kaleen

Fans and switchboards are what Kaleen residents ask us to quote most often. Ceiling and exhaust fans are a quick win in these houses: a fan in every bedroom, plus bathroom fans ducted outside so the steam goes somewhere useful.

Switchboard upgrades sit alongside that. Swapping fuses for circuit breakers with safety switches on every circuit is the single biggest safety step for a house of this age, and it gives you room on the board for whatever comes next.

After those come data cabling for studies and TVs, and EV chargers. Kaleen blocks usually have a garage or carport close to the meter box, which keeps a charger install simple.

Getting a quote

Tell us what you need through the free quote form, or call 0434 913 935. A photo of the switchboard and the rooms involved helps a lot. We are rated 5.0 on Google, and the owners bring 35+ years of combined experience.

Hi Folks, i had a circuit breaker continually tripping and thus no powerpoints working. Nicolas skilffully trouble shooted the whole thing, and worked with remarkable speed and professionaliam. I thought i had identified all the powerpoints, but i had missed a critical one on the end of the line, and as fate would have it, the solar hot water pump had a short circuit and was plugged into that one. As i say, nicolas was tops. Being a DIY person i was very interested in his work and he explained it all to me as he went along. The call out cost seemed high, but i have nothing to compare it against. And nicolas more than earned the fee and i was super pleased with the price. His focus was getting the job done without going beyond the callout fee. He made that happen. I will definately use this company again. Great experience.

These guys are the best. Initially they came over to put a couple of power points in my bedroom then they ended up installing the TV on the wall. Their second visit was to change all of my light fitting to down lights and fans in the bedrooms. And also updated the meter box to make it compliant. They’ve done a fantastic job. So reliable and efficient. Lovely guys and their work is amazing. I would recommend them 100%.

I am very impressed with Nick at Fused electrical on the recent solar installation . There are a few reasons for this:
They are on time;
Their quote was the best value for money;
Their work is neat and tidy, leaving the site clean;
They explain the installation as well as setting up the app for monitoring;
And, they are friendly and knowledgeable.
I am very happy with the quality and performance of their work and the company.

I can’t speak highly enough of the job Nick and Andre did for me. They updated the power box, installed cameras front and back and removed my gas stovetop and replaced it with an induction cooktop. Highly recommend Fusion Electical.

We heard about Fused from Facebook and chose them for our solar and battery install (Aiko 14kw and 32kwh Sig). Nick came out to the house, gave us a personalised quote and made changes as requested. He explained every part of the quote and the timeline was great for us.
The system is flawless, we have been off-grid since and love being able to use power anytime we want!

There is a reason they have so many 5-star reviews, and we have recommended them to friends and family.
Thank you guys!

Kaleen electrician FAQs

Our Kaleen house has a ducted heater but nothing for summer. Will ceiling fans help?
Yes, and they are one of the simplest ways to make a 1970s brick home bearable in January. A fan in each bedroom and the living area moves air across you so the room feels noticeably cooler. Most Kaleen homes have enough ceiling space for a fan with a light, and we can often run the cable through the existing light point.
The bathroom fan in our house just blows into the roof. Is that a problem?
It is common in homes of this age and it does cause trouble. Warm, wet air dumped into the roof space can lead to mould and damp insulation. We can replace the fan and duct it to an eave or roof vent so the moisture actually leaves the house.
We have lived in Kaleen since the 1980s. How do I know if the switchboard is due for an upgrade?
Signs include rewireable fuses, no safety switch test button, a board that is warm or buzzing, or fuses that blow when the heater and kettle run together. Even if nothing seems wrong, a board that has never been touched since the house was built is worth a look. Send us a photo and we can tell you what you have.
Can you add data points so the kids are not all on Wi-Fi?
Yes. Kaleen homes are big, with four or more bedrooms in about half of them, so Wi-Fi often drops out at the far end of the house. Running data cable to a study, the TV and a second access point fixes most of it. We usually run it through the roof and down inside the wall.
How quickly can you get to Kaleen?
We are based in Calwell and work across Belconnen regularly. For urgent faults during business hours, ring us and we will tell you honestly how soon we can be there. We do not run an after-hours service, so if something is dangerous outside business hours switch off at the main switch if it is safe and call Evoenergy's faults line.
