Electricians in Melba
Melba was established in 1972 and named after the soprano Dame Nellie Melba. Its streets honour Australian composers and performers, from Grainger Street onwards, and the suburb sits in west Belconnen between Fraser, Spence, Evatt and Flynn.
Most of the homes here have passed their 50th birthday. If yours has not had its electrics touched in that time, the meter box is where to start. We are a family owned and run Canberra electrical business, licensed (476229C) and insured, with 35+ years of combined experience between the owners.
Melba homes and what they need
The 2021 Census counted about four in five Melba dwellings as separate houses, and nearly half had four or more bedrooms. Nearly one in five are townhouses or semi-detached homes, a bigger share than in many neighbouring suburbs, which means a fair number of shared walls and common property.
What we come across in the original houses:
- Rewireable fuse boards on a timber or asbestos-backed panel, sometimes with a single safety switch added years later on the power circuits only.
- Lighting circuits with no protection at all, which matters when you are changing a fitting or a globe fails.
- Old fluorescent battens and halogen downlights that run hot and cost more to run than LEDs.
- Dark yards and side paths, because outside lighting was an afterthought when these homes were built.
In the townhouses, boards are usually newer, but supply arrangements vary between complexes, so we check what is yours and what belongs to the body corporate.
The jobs we are asked for most in Melba
Switchboard work is what Melba residents ask us to quote most. On a 1970s home that normally means replacing the whole board with circuit breakers and safety switches on every circuit, labelled properly so you know what each one does. If the backing panel might contain asbestos, we tell you before anything is disturbed. See switchboard upgrades for the detail.
Second is lighting: LED downlights through the living areas, better lighting in kitchens, and sensor lights for the driveway and back door.
Third is security systems: CCTV, alarms and video doorbells. Lighting and cameras work best planned together, so the camera has enough light to see at night.
Getting a quote
Start with the free quote form and a photo of your meter box with the door open. That one picture tells us most of what we need about an older Melba home. We reply within 24 hours, then quote from photos or book a short visit. The price is fixed and agreed before we start. If you would rather talk it through, call 0434 913 935.
