Electricians in Latham
Latham is in the far west of Belconnen, with Ginninderra Creek and Umbagong District Park running along its edge. It was established in 1971, named after Sir John Latham, a Chief Justice of the High Court, and its streets carry the names of Australian judges.
A lot of Latham owners are now working out how to run a 50-year-old house without gas, and with a car charging in the garage. That is a common reason people here call us. We are a family owned and run Canberra electrical business, licensed (476229C) and insured, and we price every job up front.
Latham homes and what they need
The 2021 Census counted close to nine in ten Latham dwellings as separate houses, mostly three and four bedroom homes built through the 1970s. About one in ten are townhouses, including the newer complexes where the old local shopping centre and petrol station used to be. The centre closed in the late 1990s after a fire, and the land was redeveloped for housing.
For the original houses, the issue is capacity. A board installed when the suburb was new was designed for a stove, a hot water system and some lights. Ask it to carry reverse cycle heating in three rooms, an induction cooktop and a 7 kW car charger and it will struggle. What we usually check:
- the main switch rating and whether the supply to the house needs attention
- room on the board for new dedicated circuits
- safety switches, which older boards often lack entirely
- the condition of original cabling where new work will join it
The townhouses are newer and their boards are generally modern, but shared walls and common property mean planning ahead for any charger or external unit.
The jobs we are asked for most in Latham
Requests from Latham come up in about equal measure across switchboards, EV chargers, heating and cooling, data and lighting. Across Belconnen as a whole, switchboards and lighting lead. They tend to arrive together here, because one upgrade sets up the next.
- Switchboard upgrades come first when the board is original. Circuit breakers and safety switches on every circuit, and space for what you plan to add.
- Heating and cooling: circuits and isolators for split systems, ducted reverse cycle and heat pump hot water.
- EV chargers, with load management where the supply is tight.
- Data cabling and lighting, which are easy to add while we are already in the roof.
