Electricians in Macgregor

Macgregor is really two suburbs in one. The eastern part went up in the early 1970s, with brick homes on streets named after people from Australian medicine. West Macgregor, on the western edge of the suburb, is a much newer estate built from the late 2000s and through the 2010s. The electrical needs of the two halves are almost opposites.

We are a family owned and run Canberra electrical business, licensed (476229C) and insured. You get a fixed price before any work starts.

Macgregor homes and what they need

The suburb was gazetted in 1971, and the first homes were built from 1972 across the slopes of Mount Goodwin and along Ginninderra Creek. In the 2021 Census about nine in ten Macgregor homes were separate houses, so most jobs are on freestanding family homes rather than units.

The original 1970s homes are now more than 50 years old. Unless they have been updated, we often find:

  • ceramic fuses in the meter box instead of circuit breakers
  • no safety switches, or one added later covering only part of the house
  • two or three power points per room, with power boards doing the rest
  • extra circuits added by earlier owners that are hard to trace

Before a kitchen or bathroom renovation is the right time to deal with this, while the walls and ceilings are open.

West Macgregor was released by the ACT Government as a large estate for a private developer to build out. Those homes have modern boards and wiring, so the work is additions: lighting, cameras, fans, data, and making room on the board for air conditioning or a car charger.

The jobs we are asked for most in Macgregor

Switchboard work is what Macgregor residents ask us to quote most often. On the older homes that usually means a full board replacement with safety switches on every circuit. See switchboard upgrades for what is involved.

Next comes lighting: replacing old fluorescent and halogen fittings with LEDs, plus outdoor and path lighting. On sloping blocks with long side paths, good lighting outside is often the bigger win.

Third is security systems: CCTV, alarms and video doorbells, which we often pair with sensor lights. After that come ceiling and exhaust fans and data cabling for home offices.

Getting a quote

Send the details through the free quote form. For older homes, a photo of the meter box and fuse board tells us a lot. We reply within 24 hours and either quote from the photos or arrange a visit. The price is fixed and agreed before we start. To talk it over, ring 0434 913 935.

Hi Folks, i had a circuit breaker continually tripping and thus no powerpoints working. Nicolas skilffully trouble shooted the whole thing, and worked with remarkable speed and professionaliam. I thought i had identified all the powerpoints, but i had missed a critical one on the end of the line, and as fate would have it, the solar hot water pump had a short circuit and was plugged into that one. As i say, nicolas was tops. Being a DIY person i was very interested in his work and he explained it all to me as he went along. The call out cost seemed high, but i have nothing to compare it against. And nicolas more than earned the fee and i was super pleased with the price. His focus was getting the job done without going beyond the callout fee. He made that happen. I will definately use this company again. Great experience.

These guys are the best. Initially they came over to put a couple of power points in my bedroom then they ended up installing the TV on the wall. Their second visit was to change all of my light fitting to down lights and fans in the bedrooms. And also updated the meter box to make it compliant. They’ve done a fantastic job. So reliable and efficient. Lovely guys and their work is amazing. I would recommend them 100%.

I am very impressed with Nick at Fused electrical on the recent solar installation . There are a few reasons for this:
They are on time;
Their quote was the best value for money;
Their work is neat and tidy, leaving the site clean;
They explain the installation as well as setting up the app for monitoring;
And, they are friendly and knowledgeable.
I am very happy with the quality and performance of their work and the company.

I can’t speak highly enough of the job Nick and Andre did for me. They updated the power box, installed cameras front and back and removed my gas stovetop and replaced it with an induction cooktop. Highly recommend Fusion Electical.

We heard about Fused from Facebook and chose them for our solar and battery install (Aiko 14kw and 32kwh Sig). Nick came out to the house, gave us a personalised quote and made changes as requested. He explained every part of the quote and the timeline was great for us.
The system is flawless, we have been off-grid since and love being able to use power anytime we want!

There is a reason they have so many 5-star reviews, and we have recommended them to friends and family.
Thank you guys!

Macgregor electrician FAQs

My Macgregor house still has the old fuse box. Is that a problem?
Ceramic rewireable fuses do still work, but they do not protect people the way a safety switch does, and they can be a nuisance when you add appliances. Replacing a 1970s fuse board with circuit breakers and safety switches on every circuit is one of the most common requests we get from older Belconnen homes.
Should I get the wiring checked before renovating a 1970s Macgregor home?
Yes. Cabling from the 1970s can be brittle where it runs near heat, and earlier owners have often added circuits along the way. A check before the walls are opened up lets you plan rewiring with the renovation instead of paying to open things up twice.
We live in West Macgregor. Our house is only about 10 years old. What do people there ask for?
Mostly additions rather than repairs: more lighting, CCTV or a video doorbell, data cabling, ceiling fans and an extra circuit or two. The board is usually modern, but we still check spare capacity before adding an EV charger or ducted system.
My house is on the Mount Goodwin slope. Does that change anything?
Sloping blocks can mean split levels, deep subfloors or long runs to a garage below the house, which affects how we run new cables. It is not usually a problem, it just shapes the quote, so a photo of the layout helps.
Can you put sensor lights along a side path and driveway?
Yes. We fit LED sensor floodlights or path lights on a switched circuit, positioned so they light the path without shining into the neighbours' windows. It pairs well with a camera if security is the main concern.
