Electricians in Molonglo Valley
Molonglo Valley is the district taking shape west of Weston Creek, on land that was pine plantation until the 2003 fires. Land in Wright and Coombs was released in 2010, the first house in Wright was finished in June 2012, and Denman Prospect and Whitlam have filled in since. Planners expect around 33,000 dwellings here once the district is finished.
That makes Molonglo the opposite of most of the Canberra suburbs we work in. Nobody here needs a 1970s fuse board pulled out. What people want is to add things: an EV charger in the garage, more lighting, data points, a battery. Most of our Molonglo calls are about extending a modern electrical setup rather than fixing an old one.
Molonglo homes and what they need
Wright and Coombs, from 2012. The first two suburbs were built while gas mains were still the rule in Canberra, so plenty of homes have a gas cooktop, heater or hot water system. These boards are modern, with breakers and safety switches, but they were sized for a house with gas doing the heavy lifting. Moving to heat pumps and an induction cooktop adds load, and we check the board and supply before you commit.
Denman Prospect and Whitlam. Later homes lean all-electric. Whitlam’s later stages were planned without gas, and since 8 December 2023 the ACT has stopped new gas network connections for homes. An all-electric house puts heating, hot water and cooking on the same switchboard, which leaves less headroom for an EV charger unless the board was planned with one in mind.
Townhouses and apartments. Wright and Coombs both have a good share of medium-density housing. In those, the work usually stays within your unit’s board, but chargers in shared car parks and anything on common property need the owners corporation’s approval.
The jobs we are asked for most in Molonglo Valley
EV charger installation is the job Molonglo households ask us to quote most. Garages in new builds make the install straightforward, and we often set chargers up to run off surplus solar.
Switchboards are next, mostly adding circuits and protection for a charger, a battery or heat pump hot water, rather than replacing old boards. See our switchboards and power page.
Lighting is third: extra downlights, pendants over kitchen islands, and outdoor and garden lighting once landscaping is finished.
Data and cabling rounds out the list. Plenty of new homes are built with too few data points, and wired connections to a home office or TV are an easy fix while the place is still new.
We also install solar and batteries here, and many homes are ready for one even if the builder did not put it in.
