Electricians in Mawson
Mawson was gazetted in 1966 and named after the Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson, which is why you drive down streets named after polar expeditions to get to the Southlands shops. The first homes went up in 1967, and the suburb sits between Phillip, Torrens, Farrer, Isaacs, Pearce and O’Malley in the southern half of the valley.
It is a more mixed suburb than people expect. A bit over half the homes are freestanding houses, around a quarter are townhouses and about one in five is a flat or unit. Renters are the biggest single group, ahead of owners with or without a mortgage. So a good share of our Mawson work comes through landlords and property managers, and a good share happens behind a shared driveway.
Mawson homes and what they need
The original houses. The late 1960s brick homes on the Antarctic streets are now well past fifty. If the board has never been changed, expect ceramic fuses, few circuits and safety switches on some circuits or none. That matters even more in a rental, where the owner is not living with the wiring day to day.
Townhouses and units. Mawson has plenty of medium density housing, and the idea has deep roots here. Swinger Hill, just across Ainsworth Street in Phillip, was built in 1972 as an early experiment in cluster housing and part of it is now heritage listed. In any complex like this, the question we ask first is what belongs to you and what belongs to the owners corporation, because outside walls, roofs and common lighting often need approval.
A changing town centre. Planning for the Southlands group centre has long pointed to taller buildings on its edges and more apartments along Athllon Drive. More units nearby would mean more strata work over time.
The jobs we are asked for most in Mawson
- Security systems. Cameras, video doorbells and alarms are the request Mawson residents send us most often, especially for townhouses with a shared driveway or a carport out the front. See security systems.
- Lighting. Replacing old fluorescent fittings and halogen downlights with LEDs, plus sensor lights for courtyards and paths. Our lighting page has the details.
- Switchboards and power. Old fuse boards in the original houses, and extra power points where a unit has too few. Read about switchboard upgrades.
- Fault calls. Tripping power and dead circuits. We help during business hours; our emergency electrical page explains what to do first.
