Electricians in Woden
The Woden Valley was Canberra’s second town centre after Civic, and its suburbs were among the first built outside the inner north and south. That history shapes almost every job we quote here. A lot of houses are now sixty years old and still running on the wiring and switchboard they were built with, while the town centre in Phillip has filled with apartment towers in the last decade.
So in one week we might replace a fuse board in Lyons, add solar to a brick home in Garran and wire a data point in a new Phillip apartment. We cover all twelve suburbs, from Chifley and Curtin through to Isaacs and O’Malley.
Woden homes and what they need
The 1960s heart of the valley. Hughes opened in 1964, Chifley and Lyons followed in 1965, and Garran, Pearce, Torrens, Mawson, Farrer and Phillip all came along in 1966. Curtin was built over the same early years. Most of these homes were built with a handful of circuits, rewireable fuses and few power points. Many have had kitchens and bathrooms redone since, but the board and the cabling behind the walls are often original. A switchboard upgrade with modern breakers and safety switches on every circuit is the job that makes the biggest difference to safety in these houses.
O’Malley and Isaacs. O’Malley came later, in 1973, and is mostly large homes on big hillside blocks. Isaacs was the last suburb finished, in 1986, on the slopes below Farrer Ridge. Wiring there is newer, so the questions tend to be about capacity for ducted heating, pool equipment and solar rather than safety.
Apartments around the town centre. Separate houses have gone from about two in three Woden homes to well under that, with flats and townhouses making up the rest. Phillip’s population nearly doubled between 2016 and 2021, almost all of it in new apartment blocks near the plaza. Apartment jobs mean working within strata rules, so we keep anything that touches common property clear with the owners corporation before we start.
The jobs we are asked for most in Woden
Switchboard and power work is what Woden households ask us to quote most. That is no surprise given the age of the housing: old fuse boards, breakers that keep tripping and kitchens with two power points for six appliances. Details are on our switchboards and power page.
Solar and batteries come next. Many of Woden’s older houses sit on generous blocks with plenty of roof, and adding a battery to an existing system is a common request.
Lighting is third. Swapping tired fluorescent tubes and hot halogen downlights for LED lighting is a quick win in 1960s ceilings, and we often add sensor lights to carports and side paths at the same time.
EV charger installation rounds out the top four. In a house it usually means a dedicated circuit from the board, which is another reason the board gets checked first. In an apartment it comes down to the building’s switchroom and the owners corporation.
