Electricians in Farrer
Farrer is one of the southern Woden Valley suburbs, tucked between Torrens, Mawson and Isaacs with Farrer Ridge Nature Reserve rising behind it. The suburb was named in 1966 after wheat breeder William Farrer, and the streets carry the names of other agricultural scientists. Most of the housing is freestanding family homes on established blocks.
The first homes went up in 1967, which puts much of Farrer at the stage where original electrical gear is overdue for a look. The calls we get from Farrer reflect that: switchboards first, then solar, lighting and data cabling.
Farrer homes and what they need
A Farrer house that has never had its board replaced is likely running on rewireable fuses, with limited or no safety switch protection and only a few circuits shared between the kitchen, laundry and living areas. Over five decades, owners have often added a power point here or a light there, sometimes without much thought to the load. That is where we find the faults: hot connections, circuits doing too much, and breakers or fuses that keep going in winter when heaters run.
Renovated homes are a different story. Many have had kitchens, bathrooms or extensions added, so the wiring can be a mix of 1960s cable and newer runs. We check how the two fit together before adding anything.
The ridge matters too. Farrer Ridge is a 185 hectare reserve that separates the Woden and Tuggeranong valleys, and it was badly burned in the 2003 fires, which reached some back fences on the reserve side. If your block faces the bush, it is sensible to keep outdoor wiring, garden lights and rooftop cabling in good shape.
The jobs we are asked for most in Farrer
- Switchboard upgrades. Switchboard and power work is the job Farrer residents ask us to quote most often. Replacing an old fuse board with breakers and safety switches on every circuit is the most useful safety step for a home this age. See switchboard upgrades.
- Solar and batteries. Next most requested. Farrer’s single-storey houses tend to have usable roof space, and adding a battery to an existing system is common. Details on solar and batteries.
- Lighting. Replacing old fluorescent and halogen fittings with LEDs that run cooler and cost less to use. Our lighting page has the options.
- Data cabling. Wired data points for home offices and TVs, so you are not relying on Wi-Fi through brick walls. Read about data and cabling.
