Electricians in Rivett
Rivett is on the far western side of Weston Creek, with Duffy and Holder to the north, Chapman to the south and the slopes of Mount Stromlo beyond. It was built from 1969 and named after the scientist Sir David Rivett, who led the CSIR and then chaired the CSIRO, and its streets carry the names of Australian plants. The local shops, ovals and long strips of parkland give it a quiet, settled feel.
Almost nine in ten Rivett homes are separate houses, mostly single storey brick on generous blocks. That makes it good territory for the jobs people here ask us about: better lighting, solar on a big roof, and getting data to the rooms at the back of the house.
Rivett homes and what they need
Two ages of house on the same street. Rivett was one of the suburbs hit by the January 2003 firestorm after it crossed Duffy. Several homes burnt and many residents were evacuated, because the suburb sat right beside the Stromlo pine plantation that was lost that day. The result is a mix. Houses that came through untouched may still have their 1969 wiring and fuse board, while homes rebuilt afterwards are on a much newer board and cabling. We ask which one you have before we visit, because it changes what a job involves.
Original boards. On an untouched home, expect rewireable fuses, safety switches on only part of the house or none, and a kitchen and living area that have been extended without much new wiring. If you plan solar, a battery or a new air conditioner, the board usually has to be dealt with first.
The forest edge. Streets on the western side look straight onto what is now Stromlo Forest Park. Outdoor lights, sheds, pumps and roof solar gear on those blocks should be in sound condition, with cable protected in conduit.
The jobs we are asked for most in Rivett
- Lighting. The top request from Rivett: LED downlights, outdoor and garden lighting, and sensor lights along side paths. See lighting.
- Solar and batteries. Wide single-storey roofs suit solar well, and owners with an older system often want a battery added. Read about solar and batteries.
- Switchboards and power. New boards for 1969 homes, plus extra circuits and power points. More on switchboard upgrades.
- Data and cabling. Hard-wired points for a home office or TV, and cable to a second Wi-Fi access point where brick walls block the signal. See data and cabling.
