Electricians in Curtin
Curtin was gazetted in 1962, named after wartime Prime Minister John Curtin, and was one of the first suburbs of the Woden Valley to take residents. Its streets carry the names of state premiers, and it sits in a tidy triangle formed by the Cotter Road, Yarra Glen and the Tuggeranong Parkway. We are based down the road in Calwell and do a steady run of work here.
What stands out about Curtin is the size of the homes. Most are separate houses, and close to half have four or more bedrooms. Many families have lived in them for decades and renovated in stages, so the electrical work we see is usually about bringing a well loved house up to date one room at a time.
Curtin homes and what they need
Radburn streets. Parts of Curtin were laid out on the Radburn model: houses face shared parkland and footpaths, and cars come in from cul-de-sacs at the back. Building started in 1963 and the first families moved in during 1964. For electrical work this mostly affects access, because the meter box and switchboard are not always where a visitor expects them.
Sixty year old circuits under new kitchens. A Curtin house may have a new kitchen and a modern bathroom and still run on its first board, or on cabling from the 1960s behind fresh plaster. Before adding anything heavy we check what the board can carry and whether every circuit has a safety switch.
Flats and the group centre. Curtin had the first group centre in the Woden and Weston Creek area, and it was planned beside several blocks of flats. The old shops building was knocked down in 2019 to make way for a five storey block with apartments over ground floor retail, which brings strata rules into some of our jobs.
The jobs we are asked for most in Curtin
Exhaust and ceiling fans are the request we hear most from Curtin. Original bathrooms often have no ducted fan, and big open living areas get warm in summer. We fit ducted bathroom fans that vent outside, laundry and kitchen fans, and ceiling fans for bedrooms. See fans and exhaust.
EV chargers come next. Larger households often have two cars and a garage or carport off the street, which makes a wall charger practical. We size the circuit and check the supply first. Details on EV chargers.
Switchboards round out the list, often as part of the first two jobs. If the board is full or has rewireable fuses, a switchboard upgrade is usually what makes a charger or new circuit possible.
