Electricians in Lyons
Lyons was established in 1965 and named after Joseph Lyons, the Tasmanian premier who went on to become Prime Minister in the 1930s. Fittingly, its streets are named after places in Tasmania. The suburb is boxed in by Melrose Drive, Hindmarsh Drive and the Tuggeranong Parkway, and the Woden town centre is right next door in Phillip, close enough for many residents to walk to the shops.
Being so close to the town centre has shaped the housing. Only about half the homes in Lyons are freestanding houses. The rest are townhouses and apartments, and more than four in ten households rent. We work for owners living in their original 1960s homes, for investors with a unit or two, and for townhouse owners working within strata rules.
Lyons homes and what they need
Original houses. The first Lyons houses are now around sixty years old. Plenty have been extended or renovated, but the switchboard is often older than the kitchen. A board with rewireable fuses or only partial safety switch cover is the first thing we look at before adding solar, a charger or a new circuit.
Townhouses and units. Medium density housing is a big part of Lyons. Inside your own unit most work is simple. Where cabling runs across a shared roof space, car park or outside wall, the owners corporation has a say, so we sort out what needs approval at the quoting stage rather than halfway through the job.
What is coming. The former Strathgordon Court public housing site, on the corner of Hindmarsh and Melrose drives, was cleared in 2020. A development application lodged at the end of 2023 proposes hundreds of apartments across several buildings there, which will make the Lyons edge of Woden noticeably denser.
The jobs we are asked for most in Lyons
Solar and batteries top the list for Lyons. Single storey 1960s homes often have usable roof area, and adding a battery to an existing system is a common question. See solar and batteries.
Lighting is next: swapping old fittings for LEDs and adding outdoor sensor lights. Our lighting page has examples.
EV chargers follow, in houses and in townhouse carports. Read about EV charger installation.
Across the wider valley, the job we are asked to quote most is a switchboard upgrade, and in Lyons it often comes bundled with one of the jobs above.
