Electricians in Griffith
Griffith surprises people. Its name brings to mind hedged gardens and 1920s cottages, and those are here, but at the 2021 Census more than half of its homes were apartments or flats, many of them a short walk from Manuka. So the suburb gives us two quite different sets of jobs, sometimes on the same street.
In the older houses, owners are mostly trying to get off gas, keep damp out of bathrooms and make the lighting work for a renovated layout without spoiling the character. In the apartments, it is lighting, comfort and security within body corporate rules.
Griffith homes and what they need
Blandfordia 5. Settlement started in 1926 and 1927 in what was then called the Blandfordia 5 precinct, renamed Griffith in 1928. Sir John Sulman planned it on Garden City lines to house public servants arriving for the opening of Parliament House. The homes borrow from Spanish, Californian and English Arts and Crafts styles and are mostly single storey. The precinct is heritage registered. Inside, these houses tend to have small switchboards, a patchwork of wiring from different decades, and heating that relies on gas or an old wall unit.
Interwar modernism. Griffith also holds some of Canberra’s earliest functionalist houses: the Whitley houses of 1939 and the Evans Crescent housing of 1940, both heritage listed. Flat roofs and solid walls mean cable routes need more thought than in a cottage with an open roof space.
Apartments old and new. The Stuart Flats, a public housing complex built in 1960, stood near Manuka for decades before demolition began in 2020 and the site was sold for private development. New buildings there and around the Manuka shops have modern wiring, so owners mainly ask for changes and additions.
The jobs we are asked for most in Griffith
Requests from Griffith spread fairly evenly across four areas:
- Heating and cooling: circuits for split systems and ducted heat pumps, often as a gas replacement.
- Fans and exhaust: bathroom and laundry fans ducted outside, plus ceiling fans for summer.
- Lighting: LED upgrades, pendants and garden lights.
- Security systems: cameras, video doorbells and intercoms.
In the cottages, many of these start with a switchboard upgrade, which is the top request across the district. For the other suburbs south of the lake, see our Inner South Canberra page.
