Electricians in Inner South Canberra
South of Lake Burley Griffin sits some of Canberra’s earliest housing. Forrest, Griffith, Kingston and Barton were built in part to Walter Burley Griffin’s plan, and many of their original cottages went up in 1926 and 1927 for public servants moving to the new capital. Around them are Red Hill, Deakin, Yarralumla and Narrabundah, where big blocks and large renovations are common.
For us, the inner south is mostly about doing careful work in valuable homes. Owners here are often mid-renovation, adding to a house that has already been changed several times, and they want the electrical side done once and done properly.
Inner south homes and what they need
Heritage precincts. The Forrest Housing Precinct follows Griffin’s 1913 street plan of circles and radial avenues, and the Kingston and Griffith Garden City precinct dates from 1926 and 1927. Houses in these areas are protected, which affects what can go on a front roof or facade. Inside, they commonly carry wiring from several eras, small switchboards and very few power points by modern standards.
Renovated and extended homes. In Red Hill, Deakin and Yarralumla many houses have had a new kitchen, a second storey or a pavilion at the back. Each change tends to leave its own layer of cabling. A full switchboard replacement during the next renovation is often the cleanest way to bring the whole house to one standard and make room for heat pumps, induction and car charging.
Units and townhouses. Between 2001 and 2021 the share of apartments in the district rose from under 28% to almost half of all dwellings, led by the Kingston Foreshore and the blocks near Manuka. Work in these buildings runs through the owners corporation.
The jobs we are asked for most in the inner south
Switchboards and power are the first request. That covers old fuse boards, new circuits for kitchens and heating, and faults that trip the power. See switchboards and power for detail.
Lighting follows closely. Renovations here often include feature pendants, dimmable LED downlights and garden lighting along long driveways.
Third is data and cabling, usually network points in a home office or a media room, plus moving the NBN connection to a sensible spot.
Fourth is security systems: CCTV, video doorbells and intercoms for larger homes on quiet streets, wired back through the roof space so the result stays neat.
