Electricians in Narrabundah
Narrabundah was named in 1928 but waited almost twenty years for its first houses. Building began in 1947, once the war was over, which made it the last of the inner south suburbs to be developed. Its early residents were construction workers from Europe and printing workers from Britain, and it is often described as Canberra’s first blue collar suburb.
That post-war start is the reason switchboards are the job people in Narrabundah ask us to quote most often. A lot of the housing here was built quickly, to a budget, and many homes have had new kitchens and bathrooms since without the electrical supply behind them ever being rethought.
Narrabundah homes and what they need
Fibro cottages. The first homes were prefabricated fibro cottages, put up in the late 1940s and early 1950s as a fast answer to Canberra’s housing shortage. Few of the originals survive unchanged. Where one does, or where an extension is clad in old sheeting, we avoid drilling or cutting it and route cable another way.
Brick duplexes. In the early to mid 1950s the government added full-brick duplexes and cottages, and many still stand. Two homes share a roof and a dividing wall, which matters for wiring: each half needs its own clearly separated supply and board, and any work in the roof space has to respect the line between them. Original boards from this period commonly carry ceramic fuses with no safety switches and very little room for new circuits.
Rebuilds and newer homes. As land values have risen, a steady share of those duplexes and cottages has been knocked down and replaced with larger houses or townhouses. Those owners come to us at the planning stage wanting provision for solar, a battery and car charging from day one. At the 2021 Census about two thirds of homes were still separate houses, with the rest split between flats and townhouses.
The jobs we are asked for most in Narrabundah
Switchboards and power, by a clear margin. Replacing fuse boards with circuit breakers and safety switches, adding power points to older kitchens and living rooms, and finding faults that trip the power. Our switchboard upgrades page explains the process.
Heating and cooling. Moving from old gas or plug-in heaters to reverse-cycle split systems, each on its own circuit. See heating and cooling.
Lighting. Replacing old fluorescent battens and fittings with LEDs, and adding outdoor lights. Read about our lighting work.
