Electricians in Kingston
Kingston is often called Canberra’s oldest suburb. It was established in 1922, before most of the city existed, and gazetted in 1928. Today it is also one of the densest. Around nine in ten homes are flats, units or apartments, most of them on or near the Kingston Foreshore.
We help both groups of owners: people restoring or extending an old cottage in the streets around the Green Square shops, and apartment owners on the Foreshore who want better lighting, more power, a car charger or a neater AV setup. The jobs are different, and so are the rules that apply.
Kingston homes and what they need
The early cottages. About 120 portable timber cottages were built for construction workers at the Causeway in 1925 and 1926, and the Kingston and Griffith Garden City precinct followed in 1926 and 1927. The Kingston Powerhouse, finished in 1915, was the first permanent public building in Canberra. The houses that survive from that era have usually been rewired at least once, often in pieces. Expect small switchboards, rewireable fuses in some homes, and kitchens and bathrooms with far fewer outlets than people now want. Heritage guidelines also shape what can be added to the street side of the house.
The Foreshore apartments. The old industrial land between the railway station and the Powerhouse was set aside for renewal in the 1990s, and apartments have gone up around the harbour since the early 2000s. These buildings have modern wiring, but owners still want changes: LED fittings in place of tired halogens, pendants over a kitchen island, extra power points, data to a study and EV charging in the basement. Anything on common property needs the owners corporation’s approval, and we can give the committee the detail it asks for.
The jobs we are asked for most in Kingston
Lighting and switchboard upgrades are equal first. In apartments that usually means LED downlights and feature lighting. In the cottages it means a new board with safety switches and enough space for future circuits.
EV chargers come up regularly, nearly always in apartment car parks, where the route from the unit’s meter to the car space and the building’s spare capacity decide the design.
We are also asked for data and cabling and audio visual work: network points, TV mounting and concealed cabling, which in concrete buildings needs some planning.
