Electricians in Kambah
Kambah was the first suburb built in Tuggeranong, and with more than 15,000 residents it is one of Canberra’s most populous suburbs. It is also one of the places we hear from most. We look after homes across the whole suburb, from the streets below Mount Taylor through Kambah Village and down towards the Murrumbidgee Country Club.
A suburb this big does not have one type of house. A home finished in 1974 can sit a few doors from one that has gained a second living area, a new kitchen and a roof of solar panels since. So we look at what has actually been done to your place, not just the year it went up.
Kambah homes and what they need
The name was gazetted in 1973 and people were living here by 1974. About six in every seven homes are separate houses, mostly single storey, with townhouses and cluster housing making up most of the rest.
The pattern we see most is an original 1970s board still running the house after later extensions were added. Rumpus rooms, enclosed carports and bigger kitchens often got their own circuits patched in over the years, sometimes through a small sub-board. The old part of the house can end up with rewireable fuses and no safety switch while the new part is protected. One modern board with circuit breakers and safety switches on every circuit fixes that, and gives you room for what comes next.
The northern edge backs onto Mount Taylor Nature Reserve, a large part of which burnt in 2003. If your yard meets the reserve, outdoor power points, garden lights and solar cabling on the roof deserve a check.
Kambah also has Urambi Village, a heritage listed 1970s cooperative of split-level and courtyard houses set in bushland. Townhouse and cluster sites like this need a bit more care, because walls, roofs and meter panels can be common property.
The jobs we are asked for most in Kambah
- Switchboards and power. The job Kambah households ask us to quote more than any other: replacing fuse boards, adding safety switches and putting in extra power points where the original layout falls short. See switchboard upgrades.
- Lighting. Swapping old fluorescent tubes and halogen downlights for LED lighting, plus sensor lights over driveways and carports.
- Solar and batteries. Big, mostly unshaded single-storey roofs suit panels well. Our solar and batteries page explains how we check the board before connecting anything.
- Data and cabling. Plenty of Kambah homes now have a study or a converted bedroom used as an office. Wired data points give those rooms a connection that does not drop out.
- Heating, cooling and fans. Split systems and ceiling fans to keep a 1970s brick house comfortable in January and July.
