Electricians in Tuggeranong
Tuggeranong is Canberra’s southern district: 19 suburbs on the eastern side of the Murrumbidgee, wrapped around Lake Tuggeranong and the town centre at Greenway. We are based in Calwell, at the southern end of the district, and more of our quote requests come from Tuggeranong than anywhere else in Canberra, so we know the streets, the house styles and the problems that come with them.
Most homes here are freestanding family houses, with a smaller share of townhouses and only a handful of apartment blocks. That means most of what we do in Tuggeranong is work on the house itself: the switchboard, the circuits, the lights and what goes on the roof.
Tuggeranong homes and what they need
The district grew in waves, and the age of a house tells us a lot before we open the meter box.
The 1970s and 80s suburbs. The first families moved into Kambah in 1974. Wanniassa followed in the mid 1970s, Monash in 1978, and Gowrie and Richardson in 1981. Many of these homes still run on their first switchboard. We often find ceramic fuses, no safety switches on the power circuits, one or two power points per bedroom and wiring that has been extended by previous owners over the years. Replacing the board with modern circuit breakers and safety switches is the single biggest safety improvement most of these houses can get.
Calwell and the Lanyon Valley. Calwell was settled from 1986. Conder, Gordon and Banks, further south in the Lanyon Valley, were gazetted in 1987 and built out in the early 1990s. These houses have safety switches, but their boards were sized for 1990s loads. Add rooftop solar, a battery, a ducted heat pump and an EV in the driveway, and the board often runs out of room. A switchboard upgrade or a supply check is usually the first step before any of that goes in.
The bush edge. The southern and western suburbs back onto grassland, the river corridor and the ranges. During the 2020 Orroral Valley fire, the ACT Emergency Services Agency warned that Conder, Banks and Gordon could face ember attack. For homes on these edges we pay extra attention to outdoor wiring, garden lights and roof cabling, and we can talk you through backup power options.
The jobs we are asked for most in Tuggeranong
Switchboard and power work is the job Tuggeranong households ask us to quote most often. That covers full board replacements, adding safety switches, extra power points in kitchens and living areas, and tracking down why a breaker keeps tripping. See our switchboards and power page for what is involved.
Lighting comes next. Plenty of older homes in the district still have the original fluorescent battens or halogen downlights, and swapping them for LED lighting cuts power use and heat in the ceiling. Outdoor and sensor lighting for driveways and back decks is common too.
Solar and batteries are the third big request. With so many owner-occupied houses on decent blocks, Tuggeranong roofs suit solar well, and more people are adding a battery to an existing system.
Rounding out the list are ceiling fans and exhaust fans. A ceiling fan in each bedroom makes summer far easier, and a properly ducted bathroom exhaust fan helps with the winter condensation that Canberra houses are known for.
