Electricians in Monash
Monash sits in the middle of the Tuggeranong Valley, between Wanniassa and Isabella Plains, with Isabella Pond and Tuggeranong Creek inside its boundaries. Lighting is the job people in Monash ask us about most, and the reasons are usually practical: the house is dim, the fittings are old, and the owners plan to stay put.
The suburb has an older population than most of Canberra, and more than a third of homes are owned outright. That shapes the work. We spend less time on brand new additions here and more on making a familiar house brighter, cooler and easier to live in.
Monash homes and what they need
The name was gazetted in 1975 and the first residents arrived in 1978, so most homes are late 1970s and early 1980s builds. More than eight in ten are separate houses, with a cluster of townhouses and Goodwin Retirement Village making up much of the rest. The streets are named after engineers, a nod to General Sir John Monash.
Houses from this period often have one central light per room, few power points in bedrooms, and boards that predate safety switches on every circuit. None of that is dangerous on its own if the wiring is sound, but it is worth a test, especially before adding a big new load.
There is also a local quirk. One of the ACT’s air quality monitoring stations sits in Monash, and the ACT State of the Environment report found it recorded most of the territory’s fine particle exceedances between 2015 and 2022, mainly from wood heater smoke trapped in the valley on winter nights. Wood heaters are still in use across the valley. If you are thinking of switching to a reverse-cycle system, the electrical side is straightforward to plan, and our heating and cooling page covers what is involved.
The jobs we are asked for most in Monash
- Lighting. Clearly the top request: LED downlights in place of old battens, brighter kitchen and bathroom lighting, and sensor lights by the front and back doors. See lighting.
- Data and cabling. Wired points for a home office or a smart TV that keeps dropping off Wi-Fi. Read about data and cabling.
- Fans and exhaust. Bedroom ceiling fans for summer and bathroom exhaust fans to stop mould. Our fans and exhaust page has the options.
- Switchboards and power. Safety switches and extra power points, covered on our switchboard upgrades page.
- Solar and batteries. Adding panels or a battery to cut power bills. See solar and batteries.
