Electricians in Banks
Banks is the last suburb before the city runs out. Head south along Tharwa Drive and the houses stop, the paddocks start, and Tharwa village is only about eight kilometres further on. Rob Roy Nature Reserve rises behind the eastern streets. We look after families right through the suburb, from the Pockett Avenue shops out to the cul-de-sacs that face the hills.
That position shapes a lot of the work. The homes are mostly 1990s family houses, now 30 years into their life, and many owners are adding the things those houses were never designed for: home offices, rooftop solar, a car charger in the garage. The edge of the bush adds a second job, which is keeping outdoor wiring in good order.
What Banks houses tend to need
The suburb was gazetted in 1987 and the first homes went up from 1992, which makes it one of the youngest parts of Tuggeranong. Most dwellings are separate houses with three or four bedrooms, with a smaller group of townhouses and very few flats. Many are owned with a mortgage by younger families, so we see a lot of practical upgrades done room by room.
Wiring from the early 90s is usually sound. It has safety switches on the power circuits and a proper earth. Where it falls short is capacity. The switchboard was laid out for a household with one TV, a gas or off-peak hot water system and no air conditioning. Put a reverse cycle split in each bedroom, add solar and plan for an electric car, and there is often nowhere left to put the new breakers. That is usually the first thing we look at.
The rural edge matters too. During the 2020 Orroral Valley fire, emergency services warned residents of Banks, Conder and Gordon about possible ember attack. Outdoor power points, garden lighting, pool pumps and solar cabling on the roof should all be in good condition and properly enclosed on a home this close to dry grass.
What people in Banks ask us to quote
Switchboards and power. This sits at the top of the list in Banks. Most requests are for a board with more room, extra safety switches, or new circuits for air conditioning and kitchen appliances. Our switchboard upgrades page explains what changes.
Data cabling. With so many people working from home some days, wired network points in a study or bedroom come up often. See data and cabling for the options.
Fans. Ceiling fans in bedrooms for the hot January nights, and bathroom fans ducted outside to stop condensation in winter. Details are on our fans and exhaust page.
EV chargers and solar. Fewer requests so far, but growing. A wall charger in the garage usually needs a dedicated circuit, and we check board space first. Read more about EV charger installation.
