Electricians in Gordon
Gordon is one of the Lanyon Valley suburbs at the far southern end of Canberra, on the west side of Tharwa Drive, with the Murrumbidgee River Corridor beyond its outer streets and Point Hut Pond and its district park inside the suburb. It is a big suburb by Tuggeranong standards, home to young families, retirees and plenty of people in between.
When Gordon households get in touch, the conversation is usually about adding something new rather than fixing something old: panels on the roof, a battery in the garage, a charger for the car. Our job is making sure the rest of the house can carry it.
Gordon homes and what they need
Gordon was gazetted in 1987 and building got going around 1990, so most homes date from the 1990s. Two kinds of housing dominate. Around seven in ten homes are freestanding family houses, many with four bedrooms. Nearly three in ten are townhouses, a much higher share than most of Tuggeranong, according to the 2021 Census.
The electrics in these homes are generally sound. Circuit breakers and at least one safety switch were standard by then, and we rarely see the problems common in the 1970s suburbs further north. What Gordon homes tend to run short of is capacity. A board laid out in 1990 had no reason to expect a 6 or 10 kilowatt solar system, a home battery, a 7 kilowatt car charger and ducted heating all at once.
Townhouses add another step. Roofs, external walls and shared parking are usually common property, so solar or an EV charger needs the owners corporation on board before we start.
Then there is the location. Gordon backs onto the river corridor and open country to the south and west. In January 2020, as the Orroral Valley fire grew, the ACT Emergency Services Agency put Gordon, Banks and Conder residents on alert. Living this close to open country is one reason some owners here ask about batteries that keep essentials running during an outage.
