Electricians in Ngunnawal
When Gungahlin was launched in 1991, Ngunnawal was one of the first two areas picked for building, and the suburb was gazetted in April 1992. Its streets carry the names of Aboriginal people and words from the Ngunnawal language, and many of the houses along them are now around 30 years old. That age is the reason most calls from here are about the switchboard.
We are a family owned and run electrical business based in Calwell, with 35+ years of combined experience between the owners. We hold ACT licence 476229C, carry insurance and are rated 5.0 on Google. Ngunnawal owners get a fixed price before we lift a tool.
Ngunnawal homes and what they need
The 2021 Census shows about two thirds of Ngunnawal dwellings are separate houses and about a third are townhouses and duplexes. There are no apartment blocks to speak of. About one in five homes is owned outright, which is high for Gungahlin and fits a suburb where many people bought early and stayed. About a quarter are rented.
What that means in practice:
- Boards set up for 1992, not 2026. A board from the first build years was sized for lights, a few power points, an oven and maybe a gas heater. Add split systems, a dishwasher, a home office, an induction cooktop and solar on the roof, and there is often no spare space and not enough safety switch protection.
- Safety switch gaps. Older boards often protect some circuits and not others. Current wiring rules call for every final circuit to have safety switch protection when a switchboard is replaced, so an upgrade brings the whole board up to that standard.
- Townhouse complexes. With a third of homes attached, some boards sit in shared meter enclosures. If yours does, the owners corporation may need to approve the work.
- Long term owners and renters. Retirees who want an easier home (The Grove retirement village is in the suburb) and landlords who need repairs and safety checks both call on us.
The jobs we are asked for most in Ngunnawal
Switchboard work is the job Ngunnawal residents ask us to quote most often. That covers full board replacements, adding safety switches, new circuits for air conditioners and cooktops, and finding out why a breaker keeps tripping. Our switchboards and power page goes through the options.
Lighting comes second. Original fittings in a 30 year old house are often dim, hot or failing, and LEDs fix all three. Kitchens, hallways and outdoor paths are where most of the change happens. See our lighting page for what we fit.
If solar or a battery is on your plans, talk to us before the installer arrives. Getting the board ready first is simpler than patching it afterwards, and our solar and batteries page explains how we approach it.
Getting a quote
The free quote form takes a couple of minutes. Tell us the job and add a photo of the open switchboard if you can, as that answers most of our first questions. You will hear back within 24 hours with either a price from the photos or a time to come and look. The quote is fixed, so the number you agree to is the number you pay. You can also call 0434 913 935.
